This subject was briefly mentioned on another thread but really should be a topic in its own right.  So off you go then.   Smile

I would rather religion was kept out of it . There are a lot of people on their own personal crusades and evangelizing about certain things as is .
Politics as well . We see what it has done to the real world and the backlashes and personal freedoms eroded by all sides .
Angel A little bit of hanky panky does you good .  Angel
I doubt the subject will garner much response anyway as some members cannot even comment on topics that are close to them.

And your reply is exactly what I stated "To my mind it is religion that is the real evil, but I have no wish to derail this thread with that elephant" in the other thread (

I am more than happy to leave it there, trust me.

Atheist here. Brought up Catholic. Which helped greatly in making me an Atheist.
How anyone in this day and age can believe in a 'sky fairy' still surprises me. Useful perhaps once for 'explaining' things but with the advent of science, reason and rationality, 'sky fairies' have long passed their use-by date. But each to their own - provided they do keep it to their own and not shove it down mine and others throats. Religion is a dangerous thing. Spirituality a different matter.
Know thy self, sissy.  Don't whine, don't pine, learn to expand your mind.
Well said. But do you believe in Santa?

I find religion, and the motivation to which makes someone religious thinking, endlessly fascinating. That said, I am an atheist-leaning agnostic.
It's funny, the only people contributing on this thread are atheists. Brilliant.

I had to delete my own post there . Fecking religion politics and the cost of disposable nappies .

I think that is probably a reflection of how society is these days. After all, religion developed at a time when humans needed explanations for a lot of the things that were going on around them. Because most modern religions are millennia old, quite complex narratives formed around these religions which obviously became quite fixed over time.

What has happened more recently (mostly in the last century) is that science has provided alternative explanations (and empirical evidence to support them). The idea that Ra carries the sun across the sky for instance loses a little credibility once it is established that it is the earth rather than the sun that is moving. Because these narratives have necessarily become so rigid, the aspects of religion that remain uncountered by science no longer hang together.

With each passing generation now, science is providing more and more answers to the extent that religious beliefs are used more as a moral guide now (though I would argue that many of the original morals have had to be developed due the change in culture - I’m not sure the bible would come to quite the same conclusion on LGBT values that most open minded people have done today, for instance - the church has changed its view on this in recent years but for a long time was resistant).
If there was ever a post designed to start a fight ....
