Digital Economy Bill (uk)
#1
How many of you (especially those in the UK), are aware that this bill will become law in April 2018?

Basically the UK government wants to put all 'Adult Sites' behind a paywall.

The details are not clear at the moment, and no one knows what sites will be included, but there is a very real possibility that this forum and PDQ could be included. It all depends how 'pornography' and 'Adult Content' is viewed by the Government.
Even if the site is hosted outside of the UK like this one you could be banned from viewing it within the UK.
It seems the only possible way around this is to set up a VPN, but there is talk that even those could be blocked from viewing 'Adult Sites' (I am not hot on computers, but this is what I have been reading and have been told)
The only alterative is to give your details to a faceless organisation who will probably end up getting hacked, and then you may end up being blackmailed.

I must stress that no one knows exactly what will happen from April onwards and what sites will be affected. This is censorship of the internet, and what is an even bigger concern is when the twits in Westminster see how easy it is to do, who will they target next?

If you are interested in this (and I hope that you are), you really should read the feminist pornographer and activist Pandora Blake's Blog at www.pandorablake.com She has done some really good work campaigning and highlighting this bill and is one of the best sources of information regarding it.

Also, you can look at www.openrightsgroup.org who are also fighting this bill.

Once you have read up on this, and you are in the UK,  I urge you to contact your MP and raise your concerns/objections regarding this matter.

If you can, I would also ask if you could find a small donation for either Pandora Blake or the Open Rights Group to help them in their work. Remember we do not know what sites will be affected, you could lose sites that you use.

Sorry this has nothing to do with petticoating, but potentially it is a very important subject.

This is different to Net Neutrality, in that you still only have one price and sites aren't charged, rather sites are just blocked if they don't have age verification that is acceptable to the UK government

Baby Sam,

I know you're more tech savvy than I or most members. Can you please explain what you mean by "direct debit to the ORG" and how a VPN helps in this regard?

Ahem: "direct debit to the ORG" You pay the Scientologists? Wink

If anyone is interested, the Digital Economy Bill becomes law in the UK on April 27th this year.

If you live in the UK this means that potentially from this date you will not be able to access any 'adult' site, without having to give your details to a faceless organisation (who will then either lose it, or be hacked)

Must stress that in truth no one really knows how this will work, what sites will be affected or indeed how long it will take to fully implement.

ORG Open Rights Group - They're fighting this

VPN - Virtual Private Network - bypasses regional restrictions. I can appear to be in a different country to where I am

Say you're in USA and want to see UK TV, (or vis-a-versa) with a VPN the provider thinks you are not in USA but UK! Or say you want to see a blocked site, that works as well.

Companies use them as people securely attach to the corporate network, plus on public wifi there is less chance of your connection being observed

The UK Government has pushed back the start date of this Bill and will now introduce it "before the end of the year"

Again for those who are interested the Open Rights Group and Pandora Blake websites keep you informed as to what is happening. We can still fight this.
